An Epiphany About Organic Blog Growth

To My Organic Readership:

Thank you.   I momentarily strayed…but I decided that I am not going to migrate or close down my WP.com blog.   It might show up as a tab on the new blog, but I think this ol’ Streetwise blog is worth keeping, even though I never really liked the name.  It’s like an old friend….and you know, I’m nostalgic like that.

This decision has almost everything to do with you.  Sometimes I get lofty goals in my head only to realize that I have something really good going on right here.   Please read on…

In March of 2012, I moved to WordPress as an experiment.  I was taking too many pictures of my DIY progress and bugging my Facebook friends with it.  So instead, I started bugging you with them.    Somehow, you decided you were cool with that and tolerated my less than perfect tutorials that never seemed to offer you enough pictures or explanation.   But you stuck around.   So, in a year’s time…while I don’t have a ton of followers, somehow I generated over 10,500 view of my website from all over the world.   By Google’s standards, this is considered organic growth.  And from what I’ve gathered…those number are pretty darn good.  Somehow this happened…

a)  …without networking outside of WordPress.com whatsoever…

b)…by “unchecking” the box that said “Make this site searchable on Google”…and…

c) …{insert blogging faux pas} —  I confess that I DO read but (almost never) comment on other people’s blogs.   I have always been a tad shy about putting my thoughts in writing and I work very hard on drafts before I publish them.

The point is…this platform is pretty amazing.   I’ve only come to appreciate that as I sit here writing this post.  As I take on one of my biggest DIY projects of the year (Google Adsense, Analytics, and building a new blog from scratch) I currently have 65 open Chrome sessions that have educated me fully on the fact that I am not terribly behind in my trending as compared with other brand-new DIY bloggers that make it their full time business.   And while I only have 44 posts to call my own…they are my content.   With my ideas.  And while I might be a part time DIY crafter and blogger (like a lot of you), I also consider writing an artform.   And if I don’t always have a new craft to show you, I can always try to be original – and write.

And here…in WP.com…that’s perfectly ok.

Blogging is not a race.  It is a craft.  I do it because I love it…and I like to keep things around that I love, (maybe even re-purpose it and give it a second life).

xo,

Jeanette
